A’a’po’e

Gin and dark rum together, with passion fruit syrup, grenadine, tiki spices, and soda. A hybrid build that refuses to choose a tradition—and is better for it.

A’a’po’e cocktail in a carved dark ceramic tiki mug, deep reddish-amber with an orchid and mint garnish, lit by warm tungsten light in the dim Forbidden Altar bar

The History

A contemporary original. The Polynesian name and the use of tiki spices anchor it in the tradition, while the gin-and-rum combination echoes classic multi-spirit builds like the Fogcutter.

Servings

Ingredients

  • 1 oz gin
  • 1.5 oz dark rum (Coruba or Myer’s)
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1.5 oz passion fruit syrup
  • 0.25 oz tiki spices (or allspice dram)
  • 0.25 oz grenadine (pomegranate-based)
  • 1.5 oz soda water
  • Orchid or heavy mint (garnish)

Directions

Combine all ingredients except soda water with crushed ice.

Pour everything into a tiki mug or large rocks glass.

Fill with soda water.

Top with more crushed ice.

Garnish with an orchid if you have one.
