Sailor’s Grog

A grog-style build with 151 demerara, spiced rum, falernum, citrus, and ginger beer. The kind of drink you’d find at the end of a very long voyage.

The History

Grog—historically rum mixed with water and lime—was the daily ration of the British Royal Navy, mandated to prevent scurvy. The genre’s interpretation elevates the concept with falernum, double citrus, and the textural contrast of ginger beer.

Servings

Ingredients

  • 0.5 oz 151 demerara rum
  • 0.5 oz spiced rum (Sailor Jerry or The Kraken)
  • 0.75 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.75 oz orange juice
  • 0.5 oz falernum
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1.5 oz ginger beer
  • Mint & orange slice (garnish)

Directions

Combine all ingredients except ginger beer in a shaker with crushed ice.

Shake briefly and pour everything into a double old-fashioned glass.

Top with ginger beer and more crushed ice.

Garnish with a mint sprig and orange slice.
