Saturn

One of the genre’s great gin entries. Gin, passion fruit, orgeat, falernum, and lemon. Light, floral, and deceptively sophisticated. Proof that rum doesn’t own the genre.

Saturn cocktail, pale yellow-gold in a coupe glass over crushed ice with a cherry and passion fruit half, in the dim Forbidden Altar bar

The History

The Saturn won the 1967 IBA World Cocktail Championship, created by J. ‘Popo’ Galsini. It demonstrates that the genre’s techniques—orgeat, falernum, tropical fruit—work beautifully with gin as the base spirit.

Servings

Ingredients

  • 1.25 oz gin (London Dry or Plymouth)
  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 0.25 oz passion fruit purée or syrup
  • 0.25 oz orgeat
  • 0.25 oz velvet falernum

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.

Shake well until thoroughly chilled.

Strain into a chilled coupe or tiki mug over crushed ice.

Garnish with a cherry or passion fruit half.
