The American kitchen-tool company that quietly makes the best entry-level bar tools on the market. OXO’s Steel Cocktail Shaker, Steel Bar Spoon, Steel Double Jigger, and Wood Muddler are not the gold standard, but they are the right answer for a starter home bar that doesn’t yet want to commit to Cocktail Kingdom pricing.
OXO is the entry-point answer. Sam Farber founded OXO in 1990 with the Good Grips line of arthritis-friendly kitchen tools and built one of the most respected industrial-design houses in American consumer goods. The bar-tool line came later and follows the same principle: the affordable version of every tool, designed well enough that you don’t immediately need to upgrade.
For a home bar that’s getting started—or for someone who knows they want to make cocktails but isn’t ready to spend $200 on tools before they’ve made a Mai Tai—the OXO Steel Cocktail Shaker Set ($30) is genuinely fine. It’s a Boston shaker, the tin and weighted glass actually seal, and you can make every cocktail in this site’s catalog with it. The OXO Steel Double Jigger ($12) is a calibrated 1 oz / 1.5 oz pour with internal lines, less elegant than the Leopold but functional. The OXO Steel Hawthorne Strainer ($15) works. The OXO Stainless Steel Bar Spoon ($14) is long enough and weighted enough to stir properly. The OXO Wood Muddler ($12) is the right shape and material for fruit and herbs.
What you give up versus Cocktail Kingdom: refinement, weight, the satisfaction of using a tool designed by working bartenders for working bartenders. What you keep: the actual functionality. A Mojito made with OXO tools is identical to a Mojito made with Cocktail Kingdom tools. The drink doesn’t know the difference.
For an Initiate-level home bar (per The Path), recommending OXO is the right call. As that home bar matures, the natural upgrade path is to replace OXO tools one at a time with their Cocktail Kingdom equivalents—usually starting with the jigger (the biggest measurable difference) and ending with the muddler (where the difference is invisible).
